A Spiritual WRESTling Match

There has been so much wonderful, uplifting, scriptural encouragement on FB these days. I guess you could say there always is.  Perhaps, though, some are feeling just a bit intimidated; feeling they don’t quite live up to the ideal picture of every believer standing armed with their five stones to slay the “Goliath” of the coronavirus. Perhaps some are loathe to admit that they or some of their family are struggling with fear.

FEAR NOT! OOOPS. SORRY. Guess you’ve heard that a lot. Easier said than done. Don’t ever be afraid or ashamed of the struggle; just don’t give up!

Why am I saying this now? Because, I’ve just listened (again and again) to this wonderful rendition of “It is Well With My Soul” and this phrase leapt out at me:

“Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

let this blessed truth WREST control…”

“WREST”indicates struggle. Struggle to believe. Struggle to stand. Struggle to conform our thoughts to the truth and lordship of Christ. (2 Cor. 10:5-NIV)

Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines “wrest” as:

1: to pull, force, or move by violent wringing or twisting or movements.

2: to gain with difficulty by or as if by force, violence, or determined labor

So, in this case, don’t “rest” from your labors to find your sea-legs in the storm, “WREST” faith and hope from the clutches of doubt and fear. Tell the devil, “Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt!”
